Choose the right Travel Insurance – Don’t leave home without it !

Surf rescue

Travel insurance is one of the most important things you need when travelling!   Don’t leave home without it!

Why?  Travel insurance is not only about medical insurance.  It covers you when you lose your camera, someone steals your laptop, your luggage gets lost or if your flight is cancelled … or even if (your worst nightmare) a family crisis occurs whilst you’re away and you need to head home in a hurry.

It is the single most important thing you should purchase before you travel! For just a few dollars a day, it should be an essential part of your travel plans, and hope you never need to use it!  Peace of mind!

My go-to insurance provider is World Nomads.  Most health funds don’t cover you whilst overseas and credit cards generally offer limited protection so for me it’s essential to protect yourself against the unexpected.

What to look for with Insurance cover

Travel insurance is one of the most complex aspects to consider when planning a trip overseas.  There are a lot of options. Choices are often overwhelming and confusing and the reality is, you really do need to scrutinise the fine print.

When considering an insurance package, make sure they have a high coverage limit on your medical expenses.  Ensure you take a minimum coverage limit of $100,000 USD to cover every possible scenario should you need serious medical and professional care.

Ensure your policy also covers emergency evacuation and care in addition to your medical cover and if a natural disaster occurs you may need to be evacuated to your home, so this also needs to be included in your cover.  Aim to have emergency protection cover up to $300,000 USD.  Usually this will be included, however it’s important you check that the insurance company will cover the cost of your flight back home if you need it.

What to look for in a policy:

  1. Ensure coverage is available for most countries in the world
  2. Coverage for injury, accident and sudden illness
  3. Coverage for lost, damaged or stolen possessions ie: cameras, jewelry, luggage etc
  4. Coverage for your expensive IT and electronics equipment
  5. Coverage for cancellations ie: flights, hotel bookings and other bookings if you have an sudden illness or emergency, or death in the family, or state of emergencies in the visited country
  6. 24 hour access to help desk

Understand what your policy ‘doesn’t’ cover

It’s just as important to know what your policy doesn’t cover.  Be sure to read the fine print to understand the policy limitations!

Most policies don’t cover accidents involving extreme adventures such as bungee jumping, paragliding or hang gliding etc unless you pay a premium for specific coverage.  Drug or alcohol related incidents are not usually covered either.  You won’t get reimbursed if the incident happended because you were ‘reckless’ or careless in handling your possessions.

Medical insurance covered under your travel insurance policy is usually only related to emergency situations ie: accidents and incidents, and is there to protect you in the case of an emergency and, if needs be, get you home in a hurry.
